My experience with Pilates was not what I was expecting. This type of exercise, or method if you will, is one of the most challenging types I’ve ever experienced.
Joseph Pilates, born in 1883 became focused upon his physical health after having many ailments as a child. He would be invited to different camps to train soldiers & citizens during which they became stronger than they were ever before.
Here is a basic description I pulled from wiki to explain the Pilates Method in a more detailed way.
“Contrology”, related to encouraging the use of the mind to control muscles, focusing attention on core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and provide support for the spine. In particular, Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and of alignment of the spine and strengthen the deep torso and abdominal muscles.
My Experience with Pilates:
At first, it was impossible for me to “think” through my moves, telling my body what to do as these moves were nothing I had ever done before. Seriously, I became frustrated because of the effort it took to control my body what I was trying to tell it to do. I finally started to get the hang of it & onto more movement I learned.
After a few sessions with my trainer, I began to notice a significant difference in my mid-section. I felt stronger in my core than I ever had before. These moves may look easy, but to keep the core engaged combined with proper breath into the move itself was a lot more challenging than you would think. *Please excuse my 11-year-old videographer*
Moving from the mat to the apparatus known as the reformer. These instruments are made for you to be in control of it as in a regular gym, it’s the machine that controls you.
This move is known as Pulling Straps I. It focused on the upper body. Again, this took some serious thought.
I have learned so much about myself through this process & I highly recommend everyone should give it a try. I believe in the theory that everything happens for a reason & I know Lakisha & I were brought together for good health. She has helped me as I’ve helped her. We have an amazing dynamic & I know we will be friends for life. She’s a “lifer”. (We met at our PiYo certification).
Lakisha Cheek (click on her photo for her FB page)
Originally from upstate New York, Lakisha came to Atlanta to study at Clark Atlanta University. With a background in track & field as well as weightlifting, Lakisha began to look for an alternative workout routine that would ease tight, bulky muscles. Discovering mat Pilates in 2002, along with Ashtonga yoga, she was overwhelmed by her changing body. She became mat certified in Pilates and yoga in spring 2003 and in February 2009 completed the Power Pilates Comprehensive Training at Studio Lotus in all Pilates apparatus. In 2010 Lakisha became certified in Redcord suspension training. When not teaching, Lakisha loves being a wife and mother of two young children.
