During my research for the cause of my autoimmunity, Hashimoto’s, I came to know The Sad Truth About the Standard American Diet.
This is not news to many of us but geez, the health crisis is getting way out of hand & the SAD is to blame, (mostly). The lobbying has also flung out of reason. With two of the top ten lobbies with the most influence are: Number Four, The Agribusiness Industry & Number Seven, Big Pharma.
The SAD Truth About the Standard American Diet.
Before I continue to write on this topic, I’d like to note that this information has been sourced from an interview with Dr. Zach Bush with the Revolution Health Center. Dr. Bush is tripled board certified in Endocrinology, Internal Medicine & Infectious Disease. Dr. Bush specializes in Leaky Gut, Autism, Type II Diabetes, Chrones Disease, IBS & Weight Management.
The way I stumbled to Dr. Bush was during my research towards reversing my Hashimoto’s. I was initially diagnosed with hypothyroidism & the message didn’t sit well with me for dependency on medication for the rest of my life. I knew deep in my gut that there was another way to deal with this. There is a reason why I’d become hypothyroid & I was determined to find out.
Fast forward about five years later, my Hashimoto’s journey led me to know that Leaky Gut is to blame. I found that I had Candida Overgrowth. Did you know that 80% of the American population has Leaky Gut? How did this all come about? In Dr. Bush’s interview, he laid it all out & I’m about to share that with you.
Let’s start with the gut.
The gut has intelligence, meaning it knows what to absorb & what not to. The small intestine is a large membrane that covers the surface area of two tennis courts. Think about that for a minute… it covers two tennis courts! That blows my mind. Keep reading you won’t believe how incredibly delicate & efficient our gut is! It’s incredibly fascinating!
The small intestines are made of TRILLIONS of cells & is only a single cell thick. Think about it like this, our skin is 75 cells thick! The intelligence of our digestive system is in between the gut membrane & is made up of proteins known as tight junctions. It resembles velcro with a hook & eye connection. Once it breaks down it’s called, “leaking junctions” which involves non-absorption of important nutrients, causing inflammation.
Symptoms of leaky gut include 2:00 PM hitting the wall, brain fog, sluggish, poor sleep & poor sex drive just to name a few. This happens due to the energy the body needs to fight leaky gut. There are tight junctions around every organ & blood vessel which begin to leak. This is known as the gut/brain barrier.
Mitochondria should be what we as humans are called. They control what we do & how we feel every second. The average human cell contains 1,000 & 2,000 mitochondria. Our mitochondria produce energy called ATP, (adenosine triphosphate) it does this by extracting energy from the food we eat & combines it with oxygen. Our bodies break down food with the bacteria in our gut converting it into micro & macro nutrients, (carbs., proteins & fats) & the energy from those feed our mitochondria which carry over to ATP. ATP stores the energy required to power us both mentally & physically. When this process is interrupted, it affects the hormones & causes things like joint pain along with autoimmunities. Mitochondria create all the power, controls communication & decides what cells live & what dies, (& when). Mitochondria control all the systems in our bodies, they are basically calling the shots in our biology. The healthier our mitochondria are the more energy we have. Unfortunately, there is something in our ecosystem that has affected our mitochondria in a negative way.
Learn more about improving your Mitochondria by reading this book. It’s incredible.
In 1976 after the Vietnam War, there was an excess of agent orange which contained glyphosate. It was used to clear out the plant life in order to see the enemy during wartime. Monsanto used the glyphosate & patented genetically modified seeds with it. This is when the introduction of weed killer was introduced into our food chain.
Glyphosate has contaminated our food system by destroying the alkaloids that protect us from developing asthma, cancers, depression, hypertension, anxiety & diabetic compounds. Glyphosate also blocks the necessary enzymes needed to prevent these diseases. It depletes nutrients from our foods. Think about it, our parent’s generation never saw the health crisis we’re in today nor their parents because glyphosate wasn’t in their foods. Today we are dependent on pharmaceuticals to treat these issues which replace what we’re missing from our food. Monsanto owns 90% of our food production.
How it all comes together.
Glyphosate functions as a direct antibiotic & kills healthy bacteria in out gut, soil & ecosystem. 70 to 75% of air samples taken were contaminated with glyphosate. 2 billion kilograms are used worldwide within a year, the USA is #1 on the list followed by China & Austraila. In 2007 it was taken off patent & is in every weed killer. Moms across America raised funds to have breast milk tested for glyphosate & 700 – 800x in concentration was found. This is the SAD truth about the Standard American Diet. And we haven’t even touched on the mass production of our livestock nor the incredible amount of processed foods that we eat.
Our gut is the hub of our biology. If it is compromised then it can have a negative effect on other parts of our bodies. I’m a perfect example as I became diagnosed with hypothyroidism, the root cause was/is my digestive system. I’ve experimented with many different foods as well as eliminated more than I wanted to in order to straighten things out with my health. I’m a very stubborn woman & I had a really hard time accepting the fact that I needed to give up so many foods I love. Food is my passion & this journey has changed my relationship with it. It’s been one of the hardest things I’ve ever been through but I’ve come to the realization that I have to respect my body & my health if I want to live a long, disease-free life. My perception of food is that it provides my body with fuel. I need to make sure I find the best fuel for it. My choices have changed to more organic vegetables & free range, natural fed proteins. I’ve had to eliminate processed foods including sugar & grains. Now that I’m 41, I can truly feel a significant difference in my energy & mood based on the quality of food I eat. That’s a very big deal to me. We are all different, just like snowflakes, no two are alike. What may work for me may not work for you. I’ve spent the past five years experimenting & eliminating foods along with the addition of exercise to find the right way to live a healthy & fulfilling life.
This is where I source my meat from.
